JAPAN MAY FACE GREEN TEA SHORTAGE DUE TO RADIATION LEAKES FROM FUKUSHIMA PLANT

Japan may face a shortage of green tea as radiation leaking from the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi power station tainted leaves, spurring the government to restrict shipments from four prefectures. The government decided on Thursday to curb shipments of dried tea leaves containing more than 500 becquerel per kg of radioactive cesium and ordered a halt in shipments from the eastern prefectures of Ibaraki, Chiba, Kanagawa and Tochigi where tainted produce was detected. TEA SECTOR FOR 40% SUBSIDY

The tea industry today called for 40 per cent subsidy under the special purpose tea fund, saying that the current subsidy of 25 per cent could neither absorb the heavy loss of revenue nor motivate planters to go for developmental activities. Indian Tea Association chairman C.S. Bedi conveyed this to the Union ministry of commerce during a consultation workshop on preparation of an approach paper on tea, coffee, rubber and spices industries for the Twelfth Plan. Full text

STUDY: NO LINK BETWEEN COFFEE, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE RISK

A new study shows no evidence that coffee increases the risk of high blood pressure. Some studies have suggested that coffee may increase the risks, but this new report finds the chance of being diagnosed with high blood pressure was no different between people who said they chugged more than five cups of coffee per day and those who drank very little. ROBUSTA COFFEE DEMAND MAY BE OUTPACING ARABICA, PRICE GAP SHOWS

Robusta coffee may be more in demand than arabica beans after a 14 percent drop in the price difference between the two varieties over the past week. Arabica coffee traded in New York was $1.62 a pound more expensive than the robusta variety traded on NYSE Liffe in London at 3:05 p.m. London time. Full text
